It can be tough to keep up with all the L&D buzzwords floating around. Luckily, we’re here to break down a familiar concept that’s gaining fresh traction: personalized learning. But we’re adding a twist—how AI-powered features can take it to the next level.

What we’ve seen across our BizLibrary clients is that AI, when built into learning management systems (LMS), makes it easier to deliver highly tailored recommendations that support both personal and professional growth

Before we get into how AI enhances personalized learning, let’s quickly define it. A personalized approach to development acknowledges that every employee processes information differently. Recognizing those differences means offering content in a variety of formats (think presenter-led vs. visual-heavy), time lengths (short bursts vs. longer sessions), and topics.

The goal? To build a more inclusive and learner-centric culture.

So why incorporate AI? AI takes the guesswork—and legwork—out of personalization. With AI handling some of the heavy lifting, L&D teams can focus on creating strategic, prescriptive programs around core areas like new manager development, sales and customer service, or change management.

At BizLibrary, we know how valuable your time is. That’s why we’ve integrated AI into our learning management system (BizLMS) in three key ways, all designed to make personalized learning easier and more effective. These features give learners more control over their development journeys, allowing them to build both technical and soft skills at their own pace.

The Learner Onboarding Modal provides the foundation for two of our AI features. When a learner logs into BizLMS for the first time, they’re guided through a quick onboarding flow to personalize their experience. This includes questions like:

  • What’s your learning style? Short and fast or detailed and in-depth?
  • Why are you here? Mandatory training or skill exploration?
  • What’s your job role? Choose from hundreds of titles.
  • What topics are you interested in? Information Technology, Business Skills, Software, HR Compliance, Workplace Safety, Leadership and Management, Sales and Service, and/or Industry Specific.

These preference inputs feed directly into the AI algorithm, shaping the learner’s experience from the get-go. Based on the inputs, learners receive two personalized content widgets:

  • BizAI’s Recommended Content
  • BizAI’s Recommendations for Your Job

Let’s take a deeper look at how both influence personalized learning.

  1. BizAI’s Recommended Content: This widget uses the onboarding selections to generate curated content aligned with the learner’s preferences. As the learner watches more content, the AI fine-tunes recommendations based on viewing patterns. Our product team has built-in rules to ensure relevance. For example, compliance training—which often requires a significant time investment—won’t skew the algorithm. That content is excluded from recommendations, keeping playlists aligned with developmental goals and encouraging consistent engagement.
  1. BizAI’s Recommendations for Your Job: When learners select their job role, the AI begins to pull content that has been pre-mapped based on skills the BizLibrary product team has researched that are related to that role. We’ve curated hundreds of content lessons for each role, so no matter the title, the learner sees rotating content that stays timely and targeted.

The last feature is our robust search functionality powered by AI. Our search capability operates similarly to Chat GPT. Designed with natural language in mind, learners can type a question like, “What is leadership?” and receive a helpful summary along with recommended courses and materials. They can begin learning immediately or save results to their playlist for later.

These three features powered by AI technology help learners find and consume content that aligns with their development interests. Whether it’s knowing exactly what they need training on and delivering relevant search results or not knowing where to begin and recommending content that may spark interest. By capitalizing on these aspects of BizLMS it not only benefits the learner, but also the administrator.

Now we understand that with technological advancements, like AI, comes questions about the ethics behind it. That’s why our product team is committed to transparency and security. Here’s what we’re committed to:

  • We only collect what learners willingly share in the Learner Onboarding Modal and we don’t track activity outside of BizLMS.
  • Content is only recommended based on what learners have access to.
  • Custom content (like lessons created with BizCreate or uploaded by an administrator) won’t appear in AI content widgets.
  • Search results are scoped to the learner’s organization—documents from other organizations will never appear.

But even with all the benefits we know that come with prioritizing employee development, getting personalized learning off the ground requires more than just great tech and budget. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Secure buy-in from leadership. Partner with your Client Success Manager to build a compelling case and presentation.
  1. Market your LMS. Let employees know what it is, what it can do, and how it benefits them. BizLibrary offers resources to help you craft impactful internal marketing campaigns.
  1. Empower managers. Encourage them to carve out development time for their teams. When leaders model learning, employees follow suit.

Personalized learning isn’t new—but thanks to AI, it’s getting smarter, faster, and more impactful. For L&D and HR professionals managing full plates, these built-in AI tools can be game changers. It’s a win for learners and a win for admins—and a step closer to building a truly continuous learning culture.
