Serving Up Successful Appraisals
X
Do your managers avoid, resist, and muddle through staff appraisals? Despite the array of programs used, do you still hear complaints that the process does not amount to more than administrative compliance, forced ritual, and poorly measured conversation? Getting managers to toast the performance appraisal process is no small challenge when mixed with competing responsibilities. Stress compounds when difficult conversations need to take place with underperforming employees, and discussing deficits takes courage and finesse. Afterwards, HR professionals may encounter shaken managers complaining of appraisal “hangovers." Can you afford to lose effervescent talent and top performers to poorly distilled appraisal practices? Join this session to assess how your organization handles this component of performance management. We will delve into the communication framework: preparation factors, the conundrum of candor, and handling adversarial dynamics. After attending, you will have a "goes-down-easy" recipe for how to effectively engage and elevate your managers' interpersonal delivery skills to support organizational success.

This session's key learning objectives:
  • Understand feedback vs. formal appraisals
  • Learn to be centered, prepared, and organized
  • Olive pits of poor planning and evaluator biases
  • A steady pour of objectivity and subjectivity
  • On the rocks with vague comments
  • Presenting future goals

As the Director of Training and Development at Watco Companies, I’ve designed and administered several training programs that revolve around one of our company’s biggest concerns, Team Member SAFETY! Like most employee training programs, I’ve had some that were very successful and others that did not make it past launch day. What was the difference between the successful and not so successful programs? Buy-in. More importantly, buy-in from all levels of the company, not just leadership. During this session, we’re going to discuss why total buy-in is vital in creating a successful program that produces the results you’re looking for, and talk about some strategies that I’ve used to help you achieve buy-in from all team members, frontline to CEO. I look forward to you joining me for this discussion!

This session's key learning objectives:
  • How to gain your leaderships' trust and obtain buy-in for your safety program
  • Proven strategies on how to gain overall buy-in for a successful safety program

While it might seem like something you have to be born with, the “it” factor is actually a set of skills you can learn and hone over time. These skills are game changers. They are often the hardest ones to master, but they will help you go further in your career faster. This presentation takes a closer look at the key components of the “it” factor, and how you can master skills in these crucial areas.

Have you ever felt defeated because you’ve spent so much time building a curriculum, just to have your learners forget everything within a few days? Stevens Institute of Technology found this to be true when several faculty members reported spending time reviewing materials students had learned from previous semesters in their first weeks of class. To address this learning retention problem and to increase overall engagement, Stevens Institute of Technology launched a “boosted learning” initiative in 2017. During this session, Assistant Dean of Stevens Institute of Technology, Robert Zotti, will explain how he was able to gain full adoption of this program from his faculty members, market the program to increase student utilization, and analyze the data to improve classroom results and student retention. Even though this process was done in a university setting, it can easily be transferred to any working environment.

This session's key learning objectives:

“Is that your real hair? Can I touch it? Where are you actually from? You’re so articulate…” Do any of these sound familiar to you? Maybe you’ve had a few co-workers repeat some of these questions or phrases to you, or maybe you yourself have asked a few co-workers some of these questions, not knowing you probably just offended that person with what is commonly known as a microaggression. There are racial-based microaggressions, gender-based microaggressions, identity-based microaggressions, and a huge list of other microaggressions that can be found in today’s workplaces. As more and more organizations continue to take a public and bold stance against racism and white supremacy, it’s important that they practice what they preach. During this session, you will learn how to identify what microaggressions are, and more importantly how you can upgrade your old vocabulary to one that’s inclusive and appropriate for the modern workforce.

This session's key learning objectives:
  • Understanding the need and benefit of embracing an anti-racist relationship with your fellow co-workers
  • Understanding the difference between microaggressions and macroaggressions, as well as the three most common types of microaggressions found in today’s workforce: racial-based, gender-based, and identity-based microaggressions
  • What you SHOULD say the next time you want to have an informative conversation with your Black co-workers and other co-workers of color
