We’ve almost all been in a situation where someone makes an offensive or insensitive comment at work. It can be quite difficult for employees to know how to react when they find themselves in these situations: is it more unprofessional to cause a disturbance, or to normalize offensive behavior?
The data is pretty clear on this, and it’s summarized by a quote by the EEOC: “incivility is a gateway for harassment.”
In other words, when employees begin to tolerate and normalize offensive behavior, they are sending the message to perpetrators that their behavior is okay; this, in turn, invites more egregious offensive behavior.
This week’s video, from The BizLibrary Collection, teaches employees how to react when they hear or see something offensive at work. By respectfully but firmly correcting bad behavior now, your employees save a lot of paperwork and expenses down the road.
