MarksNelson, a CPA firm out of Kansas City, MO, works primarily with privately-held businesses and entrepreneurs in the automotive, construction, manufacturing and distribution, and real estate industries. With 154 full-time employees and 20 partners, they are the largest locally owned firm in Kansas City. In March 2017, they were named the 15th fasted growing CPA firm in the nation by Accounting Today.
When they first partnered with BizLibrary, their vision for the employee training program was to map training lessons to the competencies that have been identified for each job role.
They launched their program in January 2017, and the initial goals of the program launch were to expose employees to each piece of MarksNelson University. Those pieces included:
- Educating employees on how their success profiles and learning tracks tie to the business’s mission, vision, and core values
- How to access the BizLibrary account and find assigned learning
- Training Career Coaches
- Introducing everyone to their assigned Career Coach
After their program launched, the entire staff participated in a game to test their knowledge on MarksNelson University. The score across the firm for total correct answers was 77.25%.
MarksNelson measures the success of their program continuously in several ways, some of which include tracking their BizLibrary client score, overall learning track progress, staff turnover rates year-over-year, employee mid-year review results, and assessing time to promotion data.
A big focus for MarksNelson is to promote a culture of learning. Implementing BizLibrary’s training solutions has allowed them to provide unlimited learning in short bites that is accessible to employees anytime and anywhere.
Another initiative was to encourage feedback and make it a habit. MarksNelson implemented their 30 Day Feedback Challenge, where partners, career coaches, and managers were emailed a tip on giving and receiving feedback each day of the month in May 2017. They highlighted BizLibrary videos on feedback in their newsletter that month to promote the challenge further.
Microsoft Excel is constantly being used at their firm, so to enhance staff knowledge on the product, an Excel expert on their team created a MarksNelson Excel Ninja certification using BizLibrary videos. Individuals who completed the certification were given a badge to put on their cube windows and included in a test group to further define learning areas needed on this topic.
The MarksNelson Universty intranet site is used as a resource library that houses how-to guides, BizLibrary competency guides, helpful articles, and any necessary forms. It also has a link to BizLibrary, a catalog that links to CPE vendors for CPAs, and folders where each staff member can access their own success profile, learning tracks, and CPE and BizLibrary certificates.
MarksNelson’s use of BizLibrary solutions to improve competencies and coaching, and to create a learning culture throughout the firm are what make them the BizLibrary Client of the Month!
