1. June is National Safety Month

Every year, the National Safety Council promotes National Safety Month, an initiative that focuses on heightening awareness of important safety issues.

Safety: Where We Live, Work and Play
The 2005 National Safety Month theme, "Safety: Where We Live, Work and Play," reflects the need for injury prevention awareness in the workplace, in our homes and communities, and on our roads and highways.

National Safety Council Data reveals:

  • 54% of injury-related deaths occur in the home and community.
  • 45% of injury-related deaths happen to workers while off the job.
  • 61% of injury-related deaths are workers off the job or their family members.

The national cost to businesses is more than $200 billion in wages, productivity, medical expenses, insurance administration and costs for those uninsured.

Turn your attention to:
Falls. Slips and falls can happen anywhere, any time. It's an especially serious problem for older people. Falls are the second leading cause of injury death for ages 55-79, but become even more prevalent for individuals over the age of 80. When all those age 65 and older are combined, falls account for 50 percent of all injury deaths.

Preventing Falls in the Workplace
Who's at risk?
If you walk, you're at risk. Slips, trips, and falls happen in every workplace, from corporate environments to manufacturing plants. However, most fall-related injuries happen in the service industry - and most fall-related deaths occur on construction sites.

Follow these tips to avoid serious injury from a fall:

  • Keep all aisles, stairs and walkways free of clutter.
  • Open cabinet drawers are a tripping hazard; keep them closed when you're not using them.
  • Turn on the lights before you enter a room. Report any burned-out bulbs to housekeeping as soon as possible.
  • Always use handrails on the stairs, and take one step at a time.
  • Broken stairs or loose stair coverings? Report them right away!
  • Make wide turns around corners, so you can see who's coming.
  • If you spot a spill, clean it up or report it immediately.
  • Stay away from shortcuts. The route less traveled may be less safe!
  • Don't overload - take only what you can carry comfortably, and make sure you can see over it.
  • When walking on a wet or slippery surface, slow down, take small steps, and keep a hand free for balance.
  • Make sure chains, guardrails, or warning tapes are in place around elevated areas.
  • Keep all harnesses and other fall protection equipment in working order, and use them correctly.
  • Wear the right shoes for the job, and keep the soles clean for better traction.
  • Participate in "Safety: Where We Live, Work and Play" by sharing this information with friends, family, co-workers, and organizations.

Shannon's Review
This course reviews the symptoms and recommended relief of sunburn, heat rash, cramps, exhaustion and heat stroke. Understanding that some professions and workplace environments cannot eliminate heat-relief is on the way. Your body has the ability to acclimate itself to the environment it is exposed to.

Other fast facts to remember:

  • Drink Water
  • Avoid Caffeine
  • Eat Lightly
  • Rest Often
  • Be Aware of Others

I would recommend this course to anyone that is exposed to heat or humidity throughout a workday. It is better to be safe than sorry!
