1. Why Risk It? Ethics & Compliance - It's Not Just a Paper Policy
Business Ethics and Compliance became a hot topic in our culture when corporate giants Enron and Arthur Anderson collapsed in the wake of ethical scandals. Since then, our media seems to have become saturated with reports of unethical business dealings. Just last month, Boeing Corporation agreed to a tentative $615 million payout to avoid criminal charges, brought on by allegations from its employees. To address this issue, Boeing announced it is placing a new emphasis on compliance training. While this might be a huge undertaking for a corporation its size, some might argue they’re just following the law. Under Federal Sentencing Guidelines - designed to encourage good corporate citizenship - under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, U.S. employers are now required to provide extensive compliance training.
Is this just an issue for large, publicly traded Fortune 500® organizations, or does it affect smaller, privately owned businesses also? There are a few elements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act that all business owners and HR professionals should note. The Federal Sentencing Guidelines apply to all U.S. organizations, not just publicly traded companies. What’s more – simply distributing an ethics policy to your staff is not enough. Federal law now requires that compliance and ethics training be an organizational activity – not just a policy on paper. It’s also required that your organization’s ethical training be a process – provided periodically, rather than a one-time session. In the event that your organization faces allegations of unethical conduct, your punishments are greatly reduced with evidence of an ongoing compliance and ethics program. On the other hand, organizations that are found to have inadequate compliance and ethics training, face greater punishment in the wake of any ethics allegations.

2. Making the Spanish Connection

Business Training Library is partnering with Lexicon Training Services, a widely-recognized and proven specialist in workforce training for America’s burgeoning Hispanic market.
English / Spanish Courses
Bilingual comprehensive training programs that cover a broad range of supervisory skills are now available, in addition to an extensive program in sexual harassment prevention that meets the rigorous training standards of California and several other states.
Supervisory Skills
“Our program on leadership and supervisory skills, Successful Leadership and Management (Supervisión y Liderazgo), is entirely bilingual, offering all print and media in English and Spanish,” says Adrian Aguirre, Managing Director of the Los Angeles-based company. He explains that it “consists of five one-day courses with bilingual video and extensive Leader’s and Participant’s Guides. We’re excited to join Business Training Library in bringing this training to team leaders, and new and existing supervisors—regardless of their level of English language proficiency.”
Training Both Populations
Aguirre is quick to point out that the identical high-quality training is available in both languages, for both the English-speaking employee population and its counterparts who may still wish to conduct some of their training in Spanish. "It's the best of both worlds, since most Hispanics want the 'mainstreaming' that comes when the training is available in English as well as Spanish. We don't want to be known only as a Spanish-language training company."
Industry Leader
Lexicon Training Services is continually developing a variety of courses for its Carreras sin Barreras (Carriers without Barriers) series. The company is a subsidiary of Lexicon Marketing Corporation, the premier provider of English-language training for the Hispanic marketplace; its tremendously popular Ingles sin Barreras (English without Barriers) course enjoys a 95% brand recognition rate among Latinos.
More than Language Training
“It’s a natural step for Lexicon to enter the corporate training market,” comments Karen Peratt, Lexicon’s Director of Research and Development. “Our customers want more than just language training; they want skills and orientation to the workplace that will help them advance and get better jobs.”
Simultaneous Skill-Development. Peratt and Aguirre head a development team that has produced bilingual courses in computer skills, sexual harassment prevention and Vocational English-as-a-Second-Language. “Our VESL course is a great supplement to our workplace skills-building curriculum,” says Peratt, “so our learners can improve their English and their job skills simultaneously.”
Fastest Growing Population
“We think Business Training Library, with its focus on small-to-medium-sized businesses, is a perfect fit for our products—most of which can be used in mentored or self-study learning,” adds Aguirre. “The important thing is to encourage Hispanic employees to take advantage of these training opportunities. Latinos are the fastest growing segment of our population, and it’s imperative that we offer them on-the-job language and skill building. It’s a win for both the employees, who improve their own capabilities, and their employers, who improve their company’s productivity.”
Bilingual Course Offerings
The five bilingual supervisory skills programs offered by Business Training Library are from Lexicon’s Successful Leadership and Management curriculum: Introduction to Workplace Culture, Making the Jump to Supervisor, Management Communications, Motivating and Goal Setting, and Working Successfully with Others. The bilingual compliance course offering is “Preventing Sexual Harassment.”

Jennie's Review
A much-needed course arrives in the library this month. The growing concern of most organizations right now is the loss of veteran employees, managers and supervisors, of that “baby boomer” generation as they start to retire. The biggest problem does not come from a lack of replacements, but a lack of qualified replacements.
Several companies will be promoting new managers, leaders, and supervisors from with-in over the next 10 years. These individuals might be very proficient in on-the-job skill sets, but when it comes to the added responsibilities of a managerial or leadership role they come up short.
This new 5 course series on Successful Leadership and Management will be great for helping employee make the transition. The courses provide solid support materials that include leader’s guide and participant workbook, both of which translate the English and Spanish information.
Each of the five courses will help give your new managers and supervisors the tools they need to take on their new role. The series would also serve as a positive refresher-training tool for more seasoned managers and other leaders.
