1. Goal Setting, Leadership and Life Lessons in Girl Scout Cookies®
The first few months of the year bring about a few certainties – resolutions, for many of us - cold temperatures, the Super bowl, Valentine’s Day … and Girl Scout cookies! Girl Scout troops are out in full-force selling the cookies that we have all grown to know and love – thin mints, trefoils, and tagalongs are among the eight varieties that have become as much a part of American culture as apple pie and baseball. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is in its 90th year, and generates $700 million in revenue.
So, what’s in a cookie? For the Girl Scouts of the USA, the annual activity of selling cookies is directly related to their mission of nuturing young girls to realize their full potential, so that they may become strong, confident, and resourceful citizens. Most troops around the country take this opportunity to teach and practice life skills like goal setting, public speaking, financial management, marketing and sales, customer service and teamwork. The Girl Scount Cookie Program provides girls ages 6-17 with an invaluable experience to build their self-confidence, leadership style, and important skills that they’ll use throughout their adolescent and adult lives.
Maximizing on the opportunity to coach their troop on the important lesson of financial responsibility, a troop in Redding, California has partnered with Merrill Lynch. A Merrill Lynch representative is set to speak to their troop about the importance of financial management and savings. Many troops encourage their young entrepreneurs to write a sales pitch and marketing plan. As a sales incentive, prize levels are offered to the girl scouts that reach various sales goals. Team or troop goals are also established, fostering teamwork as the girls strive for a common goal.
“The millions of Americans who support the Girl Scout Cookie Program are helping girls across the country build important leadership skills," says Kathy Cloninger, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. "Through cookie activities, girls learn how to plan, build teams, speak up, make decisions, solve problems and manage resources. These skills add up, so that ultimately, girls learn to be leaders -- in their own lives -- and in our communities."
So as the Girl Scout cookie sales wrap up this month, and you are tallying your cookie boxes, you’re getting more than your favorite Girl Scout Cookies … you’re helping to nurture the life skills of young women, sure to be leaders of tomorrow.

3. New White Paper: A Guide to Evaluating Multimedia Training
So you’ve made the decision to use multimedia training resources as part of your overall training strategy. You can take the low cost route and purchase generic off-the-shelf products, or you can expend more of your training budget on your own development. But do you know how to tell the difference between high quality multimedia and multimedia that is substandard (it may do the job but not as well)?
Download Business Training Library’s white paper, “A Guide to Evaluating Multimedia Training,” which outlines what research tells us about multimedia training and the criteria used by training professionals in selecting multimedia resources.

Sara's Review
One For All: Teamwork The Meerkat Way is a very unique, fun, and cute video. It provides actual footage of the meerkats in their natural habitat. The meerkats are definitely attention grabbers, and this video would serve as a great meeting opener! Primarily, the video is more of a light-hearted illustration of teamwork; rather than a content-rich source of team building principles. The team building themes of cooperation, respect, accountability, and communication are introduced in the video, but not covered in-depth. Overall, I would give One For All: Teamwork The Meerkat Way three stars out of five stars because while it lacks in-depth content, it would serve as a fun meeting opener for a team building session!
