1. Three Essential Skills for Re-entry into the Workplace
| As we get ready to celebrate Memorial Day, we thought this would be a good time to offer some support for our friends, family and neighbors who will be looking to re-enter the private sector after serving our nation in the armed forces. There are a very specific set of skills that are important in military service, and there are many skills our veterans acquire, hone and develop that are transferable to many private sector jobs. Here are a few suggested skills we think are important for anyone re-entering today's job market: |
|
- Social Media Literacy. It's hard to image anything having a greater impact on the job market and job seeking than social media. The old adage that "It's not what you know, but who you know" has never been more true. The wonderful thing about social media is there are so many more ways to "know" people than ever before. Additionally, social media is now impacting the way we work in ways just as profound as the ways in which it affected networking, communications and interactions in a job search context. So - get up to speed on social media - and do it soon! Build a network at Linked In and Facebook. Research and connect with people on blogs and micro-blogging (Twitter). These tools are being adopted in ways nobody could predict two or three years ago to day-to-day business operations, training and workplace communications.
- Presentation Skills. Nobody has to be an expert public speaker, but we all need to be able to present ideas, concepts and our qualifications effectively. The skills needed to do this run from writing, to design of PowerPoint presentations to resume development. Additionally, presentation skills are important at the interview stage of job searching. You simply must be able to effectively communicate the value you might bring in your next role, and once you land a new job, you can rest assured there will be a presentation somewhere along the line that will be important for a sale, a raise a promotion, etc.
- Adaptability. The work world is changing rapidly, and organizations need people who can adapt and change along with the market. It's important to find ways to stretch yourself, and expose yourself to a wide range of ideas. The broader your understanding of the market, your chosen field and your targeted future employers, the better you will be able to present yourself as informed, curious and able to absorb new information and ideas. These are traits many (most) organizations find very valuable.
There are many other traits and skills needed for success in today's market, and many of these key qualities are going to be specific to job roles, organizations or industries. But these three major skills will put anyone in a more competitive position in the current market
