1. New Managers - Promote to Fail? or Promote to Succeed?
There are several studies available that indicate somewhere around 40% of newly promoted managers fail (terminated for performance, voluntarily resign or perform significantly below expectations) within 18 months of being promoted. This data isn’t new, either. Organizations have been studying the rate at which newly promoted managers succeed or fail for the past 15 years or so.
The primary reasons for this failure rate are:
- Failure to establish a cultural fit > 75%
- Failure to build effective teamwork > 52%
- Unclear about expectations > 33%
- Lack of internal political savvy > 25%
- No internal process to assimilate > 22%
So – what are we to do? Stop promoting? Of course not! What we need to do instead is work to make sure our newly promoted managers are adequately prepared for their new role. We can do this by:
- Providing clear direction about the new role
- Help the new manager establish and build new relationships and networks (internal and external)
- Provide training and development opportunities
|
The skills needed to effectively manage people are quite distinct from the skills needed to be a successful individual contributor. Some important training and development areas might be:
- Basic supervisory skills
- Communications - difficult conversations
- Delegation
- Basics of leadership
- Power and value of professional networks (internal and external)
- Decision making
|
There are many other areas where new managers might benefit from training and development, but these core areas will provide a solid foundation for success in a new role as a manager.

2. Content Partner Spotlight: StarThrower

Star Thrower creates programs that develop people's ability to think rather than react. Their programs help institute real change; individual change that can make a fundamental difference in the way an organization behaves. Their programs include titles from: Joel Barker, an independent scholar and futurist; Dewitt Jones, one of America's top professional photographers; Jamie Clarke is an adventurer, as well as gifted author and speaker; and Laura Goodrich, an internationally recognized expert in the field of workplace dynamics and relationships
When you view a Star Thrower film, you will find a thought provoking tool with clear training points and superior production quality. Additionally, most Star Thrower products come with a complete set of support materials to make training even easier.

4. 1-Hour Course Model: Learning Opportunities That Take Less Time
There’s a pressing need to train more employees, in more subjects, in less time than ever before. One hour courses provide learning opportunities that take less time.
Based on customer feedback, SkillSoft, one of our content partners, decided early in 2010 to adopt a new 1-hour course model for standard Business Skills course development. These courses leverage the Narrated Animation for Business Skills content style adopted for all Business Skill development, and in all respects will be just like the other narrated animation courses in our library, just shorter.
The courses that will leverage this new 1-hour model were selected based on feedback received in Skillsoft’s annual content survey asking for new content in some of the most popular Business Skills subjects. The subjects selected for update were both highly requested and are among the most used courses.
This year we expect to release approximately 120 1-hour Business Skills Courses. The subjects we’ll be covering can be found below. Check back for updates as we will add new courses as they become available.
