1. Six Tips for Developing a Sustainable Organization
| While the concepts of green business and sustainable enterprise are not new, they are becoming increasingly vital in today's business climate. As we celebrate Earth Day, most of us take stock of our personal behaviors and how those behaviors might make our physical world “greener” or more sustainable. This seems like a great opportunity to talk about some of the things that make great organizations sustainable work environments, too. |

Company Culture can be considered the pulse or energy source of an organization. A company’s culture is defined by its people. When organizational leaders place their people first, those people will take care of the things that are important to the organization. This culture of “accountability,” to borrow from Randy Pennington, author of Results Rule!, is crucial to making an organization a truly exceptional one – both in terms of business success (profitability), but also in terms of social sustainability as a work environment. When people feel valued, when they believe their contributions matter, when people feel challenged to perform at the best each day, they become highly motivated. (See Drive by Daniel Pink). It’s these organizations that are sustainable – in both good times and bad.
What can we do to help our own organizations become sustainable? Well, we can learn the following 6 things from nature ecosystems that might help. (Inspired by and modeled on ideas from Bradford L. Glass)
- Recognize that every part of our organization is interconnected. Events do not happen in isolation.
- Embrace the natural cycles of work and rest found in BOTH people and organizations.
- Accept the need for a balance between order and chaos. Change is inevitable if an organization is to be sustainable, and change usually occurs when order and chaos are in balance.
- Accept the unique differences among our employees.
- Work to keep the organization open so that no employee or person feels like there are barriers to expression, good ideas and creative contributions.
- Keep things simple.

3. Featured Case Study: Building a Stronger & More Productive Extended Enterprise [RSPA]
As training and HR professionals we understand that for a company to remain successful and competitive, it must keep its biggest assets – its people – engaged and committed for the long term. It's a known fact that even the most lucrative compensation plan alone is not enough to keep your much-needed employees from moving on, so your organization must utilize successful strategies for retaining employees. Have you considered applying these same strategies to your extended network of partners, customers and members?
The Retail Solutions Providers Association (RSPA) is the only association dedicated to the retail technology industry. Education and training are top priorities for RSPA. The Association is applying some of the same engagement strategies to their extended enterprise (member organizations) that organizations typically implement with their own employees. Offering training and certification programs to their extended enterprise they have increased engagement, loyalty and -- increased revenue!
Through their Certification Programs:
- They are enjoying a much more engaged and satisfied membership
- The name recognition and brand awareness of the association is growing
- They have cut training costs and added revenue by gaining new members as a direct result of the certification program for organization members.
